Writer's Block: Into the wild
No, I probably wouldn't. Many zoo animals were born in captivity and don't have the skills to survive in the wild, even assuming that the local conditions surrounding the zoo in question matched their natural habitat. Also, if the animal were a top-level predator, there are a lot of people who'd consider it too dangerous to be running around, and it might get killed rather than recaptured.
Even the escaped peacock, which could certainly have found a hospitable environment in the city, was in enough danger from traffic that I wouldn't have freed it on purpose.
It's sad that there aren't enough natural environments left that can support a lot of the animals in zoos, but that's the truth of it.
